Mundaka, Urdaibai, Bizkaia · Spain
When a solid autumn swell meets the sandbar at the mouth of the Oka estuary, Mundaka produces the best rivermouth left in the world: a 400-metre spinning barrel that starts beside the harbour wall and peels along the sand towards Laida beach. You jump off the tiny fishing harbour steps, take three strokes, and you are in one of surfing's genuine cathedrals — with the hilltop church of Santa María above you and the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve wetlands behind. It is a fickle masterpiece. The bar is rebuilt every year by winter river floods, the wave only truly breaks from mid to low tide on a west-northwest groundswell, and when it is on, the takeoff zone hosts every good surfer in Euskadi. Bring patience, a fast left-friendly board, and manners. Stay in Mundaka village itself — pintxo bars, one hotel, several pensiones — or in Gernika ten minutes up the estuary railway. Flat days are for San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, Bilbao's Guggenheim and beach peaks at Laga. October and November are prime; around £550 for a self-catered week with a hire car from Bilbao.
