Overview

From the lighthouse fort of São Miguel Arcanjo you look straight down into the largest ridden waves on earth. An undersea canyon 5,000 metres deep aims the full North Atlantic at Praia do Norte, and on the right winter day the sea stacks up into 20-metre grey pyramids while jet-skis thread the whitewater like insects. Even as a spectator, the ground-shake of a big set is something you never forget. Be honest with yourself about the surfing. Tow teams here are professionals with safety drivers and radio protocols; unless you are one of them, this trip is about watching giants from the fort, then paddling proper (and still punchy) waves at Praia do Norte on the small days or around the headland at Praia da Vila. Several operators run big-wave awareness clinics and forecasting workshops in town. The variable is the forecast itself — giant days come in 48-hour windows between long flat or stormy spells, so build a flexible week from October to March. Nazaré town has abundant winter guesthouses; the funicular links the beach to the clifftop Sítio. Around £900 for a week with accommodation, clinic and hire car; sardines and vinho verde stay mercifully cheap.
