Lagundri Bay Right, Nias Island

Overview

The right-hander at Lagundri Bay is the most photogenic wave in Sumatra: a perfect almond barrel that stands up on the same patch of reef every time, peels for a hundred metres, and delivers you into a deep keyhole channel for the easiest paddle-back in world surfing. Since the 2005 earthquake lifted the reef half a metre, 'The Point' at Sorake breaks harder and hollower than the wave that made it famous in the 1970s. You stay in a losmen on the point itself — board racks downstairs, the lineup thirty metres from your balcony — while local kids who rip harder than you share the peak. Smaller days offer The Machine and Kiddies Corner inside the bay for a gentler warm-up. Getting to South Nias takes commitment: fly Medan to Gunungsitoli, then a three-hour drive south to Teluk Dalam and the bay. The variable that catches visitors is the wet-season lull and the crowd factor when a good pulse hits during July and August; June and September offer the best balance. Ten days with losmen board and motorbike hire comes in around £650. Malaria precautions and a solid reef-cut kit are essential kit, not options.
