Overview

The Great Mosque of Djenné is the largest mud building on earth, replastered by hand every spring in a festival of ladders, baskets and river clay. Stand in the Monday market beneath its towers — turbaned Fulani traders, pyramids of dried fish, the mosque glowing like risen bread — and you are looking at a scene essentially unchanged for five centuries. Pair it with the Bandiagara Escarpment, where Dogon villages cling beneath cliffs honeycombed with ancient Tellem granaries, and you have West Africa's most extraordinary cultural journey. Be honest with yourself about the security reality: the FCDO and most Western governments currently advise against all travel to central Mali, insurance is effectively void, and the handful of trips that run do so with vetted Malian guides via Bamako. This is an itinerary to hold ready for the region's reopening, or to attempt only with serious, current local advice. When conditions allow, November to February is the cool season. Nine days from Bamako with guide, 4x4 and simple auberges runs around £1,600–£1,900. The Dogon walking is hot but never technical.
