Timkat in Gondar: Epiphany at the Emperor's Bath

Overview

On 18 January the tabots — replicas of the Ark of the Covenant — leave Gondar's churches under embroidered umbrellas, carried on priests' heads through streets packed with white-robed pilgrims. All night the chanting continues around Fasilides' Bath, and at dawn the water is blessed and hundreds of young men leap the walls into the pool in a spray of green water and euphoria. Timkat, Ethiopian Epiphany, is one of Africa's great living festivals, and Gondar is its finest stage. You base three nights in Gondar for the Ketera procession, the vigil and the plunge, with the seventeenth-century castles of Fasil Ghebbi and the angel-painted ceiling of Debre Berhan Selassie between ceremonies. Then drive to Bahir Dar for Lake Tana's island monasteries — Ura Kidane Mehret's painted walls are the pick — and the Blue Nile outflow. Book flights and rooms four to six months ahead; Gondar sells out completely for Timkat and rates triple. Check FCDO advice for northern Ethiopia before committing.
