Overview

Chobe National Park holds the densest elephant population on Earth — an estimated 120,000 range the riverfront in the dry season, and from the water you are in the middle of it. The rhythm is fixed: game drive at dawn along the floodplain, then a boat cruise at four, when breeding herds file down to the Chobe River to drink, swim and dust-bathe metres from your gunwale. Lion, leopard, wild dog and thousand-strong buffalo herds patrol the same strip, and the Savuti marsh to the south-west is famous for lion prides bold enough to hunt elephant. Timing is the variable that catches people out: come in the May–October dry season, when interior waterholes fail and wildlife concentrates on the river; green-season visits are lovely but the herds scatter. Kasane airport is ten minutes from the park gate and Victoria Falls is 90 minutes by road — combine them. Budget from roughly £3,200 per person for six nights at mid-range lodges, considerably less if you self-drive and camp.
