Walk the levada network of Madeira — a 2,500 km system of ancient irrigation channels carved into the island's cliff faces and through laurisilva cloud forest, maintained since the 15th century — on paths that follow water at gradients of 1:1000 through tunnels, over aqueducts, and along cliff ledges above the Atlantic 1,000 m below. The Levada do Norte and Levada do Caldeirão Verde provide the most dramatic sections; the PR1 Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo route is Madeira's finest mountain walk. All-year destination with mild temperatures.
