Chamonix to Zermatt, Pennine Alps · France / Switzerland
The classic high-level alpine traverse connects two of the world's most iconic mountain towns across 180 kilometres of glacier, moraine, and high pass — entirely above 2,000m for most of its length. It is not a technical route, but it is a serious one. The weather, the altitude, and the cumulative daily elevation gain of 12,000m across fifteen days demand respect. The route starts in the shadow of Mont Blanc and ends with the Matterhorn filling the valley ahead of you on the descent into Zermatt. In between: the chaotic crevassed Glacier du Trient, the hanging valley of Arolla where chamois appear at dusk on the lateral moraines, the brutal ascent to the Col de Riedmatten (2,919m) with hands on rock, and the surreal flat expanse of the Grand Désert glacier where you can walk for an hour and feel no closer to anything. Huts are comfortable and sociable — the Swiss Alpine Club system is the best in the world for multi-day mountain travel. Book the entire chain in March for a July departure; rooms go fast. The traditional route runs hut-to-hut in roughly 15 stages. Most walkers carry just a 10–12kg day pack, leaving heavier gear for a single duffel sent ahead by taxi on rest days. The Chamonix to Zermatt direction is the classic for good reason: the weather typically deteriorates from west to east, so you start in worse conditions and finish in the best. The final descent into Zermatt with the Matterhorn appearing around every corner is one of the great finishes in alpine trekking.
