Camino Frances de Santiago

Overview

The Camino Frances — the French Way — is the principal route of the Camino de Santiago, the medieval pilgrimage road to the tomb of Saint James at Santiago de Compostela. From Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in the French Pyrenees it runs 780km across northern Spain: over the Pyrenees to Pamplona, through the Meseta's flat wheat plateau, over the Serra do Cebreiro into Galicia's green hills, and down to the cathedral at Santiago. Walking it takes 35 days. The Camino is not a wilderness walk — it is a human road, a civilisation walk through two millennia of pilgrimage culture. You walk on Roman roads, sleep in medieval monasteries, and enter Burgos Cathedral past pilgrims who have walked from southern France or further. The albergue system — pilgrim hostels at 8–12 EUR a night — creates a social structure that generates its own friendships and rituals: coffee at dawn, hospitalero stamp in the credential, shared dinner at a communal table. The Meseta — the 200km wheat plateau between Burgos and León — is what separates the Camino from other long routes. It is flat, wide, and repetitive. The sky is large and the path is straight. People who have walked the Meseta describe it as a meditation or an ordeal or both. There are no shortcuts and no scenery. The mind has to deal with itself. The final day's walk into Santiago — the city in the rain, the plaza, the cathedral facade — is one of the great arrival moments in any form of travel.
