Ski the backcountry above Gudauri resort in the Georgian Caucasus — high ridges and north-facing couloirs above 3,000 m that receive dry, light powder from continental weather systems — on guided tours that access terrain otherwise requiring helicopter from a resort that remains uncrowded by European standards. The Kazbegi valley below Mkinvartsveri (Kazbek, 5,047 m) is accessed by 4WD from the resort for multi-day touring. Tsminda Sameba Church at 2,170 m, with Kazbek towering behind it, is one of the most photogenic religious buildings in the Caucasus.
