Overview

La Grave is the anti-resort. One telepherique, no grooming, no ski patrol, no safety nets, no marked runs, no snowmaking. What you get instead is 2,150m of vertical on the north face of La Meije — the last unclimbed major Alpine peak when it was finally summited in 1877 — served by a single gondola that deposits you above the glaciers. The terrain is entirely natural: glaciers, crevasse fields, couloirs ranging from 35 to 55 degrees, and open snowfields that funnel you through cliff bands and moraine. First-timers typically hire a local guide (essential for your first season); regulars learn the terrain intimately over years. The locals who ski here daily in January are among the best off-piste skiers in Europe. The village of La Grave has resisted development with impressive stubbornness — a few cafés, a hardware shop, some basic pensions, and the Café de la Meije where the guides and mountain workers drink. No spa, no après-ski, no nightclub. Just skiing and mountains. December–April is the season. The lift doesn't open until the snowpack is safe — sometimes January. Skiers who come specifically for La Grave's culture stay in the village and ski every day the lift opens.
