Overview

Verbier's Valais backstory: it hosts the Freeride World Tour finals, its terrain is the benchmark against which other resorts are judged, and its après-ski is equally renowned. But beyond the circuit runs and Mont Gelé chair, the serious playground extends into the 4 Vallées — 412km of piste and an interconnected backcountry that links to Nendaz, Veysonnaz, and Thyon. The Stairway to Heaven off-piste zone, accessible from the Jumbo cable car, gives access to the Swiss-Italian border terrain above 3,000m. The Vallon d'Arby couloir, the Chassoure face, and the Gentianes bowl are legendary powder zones tracked by resort guides and freeriders who wait out storms at the Farinet bar. Beyond Verbier, the week-long Haute Route from Verbier to Zermatt (or Chamonix in reverse) follows a classic ski mountaineering traverse through the Pennine Alps — five to eight days of glacier travel, hut stays, and summit skiing at altitude. Non-trivial navigation and glacier skills required. Verbier village is expensive — budget CHF 500–800 per day including accommodation, lift pass, and food. Shoulder weeks in March/April offer better snow and lower prices than peak February.
