Ski tour the glaciated backcountry above Lake Louise in Banff National Park — skin across the frozen lake and up past the Plain of Six Glaciers into an amphitheatre walled by Mount Victoria and Mount Lefroy, with ski lines dropping back towards the Chateau that you may have entirely to yourself on a midweek morning. The Canadian Rockies deliver reliably cold, dry snow, and the Skoki Valley behind the resort offers gentler powder bowls when the alpine is loaded. One note of history: the Abbott Pass hut (2,926 m), long the classic high objective here, was dismantled in 2022 after the ice beneath it melted away — the pass remains a serious mountaineering objective, now without shelter. This is crevasse-complex terrain with real avalanche exposure: rope, harness and crevasse-rescue kit are as essential as transceiver, shovel and probe, and the daily avalanche bulletin sets the plan. Most parties base in Lake Louise village and hire an ACMG guide — around £1,700 for six days with guiding. February to April balances snowpack, daylight and cold; when the rope-team systems click, the Wapta Icefield hut-to-hut traverse across the Waputik névé is the natural next step.
