Overview

Bella Coola sits at the end of a glaciated fjord in the Coast Mountains of British Columbia, accessible only by a notoriously steep gravel road or floatplane. The mountains surrounding the valley hold some of the deepest snowpack and most untracked terrain in North America — which is why heli-ski operations here have drawn powder obsessives since the 1990s. A typical week involves four to six helicopter-accessed runs per day, dropping groups onto ridge spines above tree line before skiing 1,000–1,800m vertical through old-growth cedar and spruce forest to pickup zones. The trees here are different from most heli-ski terrain — massive old-growth with wide spacing, skiing through them like a cathedral. The snowpack is maritime — heavy and wet by January standards, but settles into a dense, supportive base that holds well into April. The real seasons are February through April when cold high-pressure systems deliver weeks of consistent powder conditions. Packages are typically week-long all-inclusive affairs run by Tweedsmuir Park Lodge or similar operators, including accommodation, meals, guide, and around 100,000 vertical feet of skiing.
