Overview

Every ski film segment you have ever rewound — fluted spine walls, sluff management, 45-degree faces holding impossible snow — was probably shot in the mountains behind Haines. The Takhinsha and Chilkat ranges catch maritime storms that glue metres of snow to terrain it has no right to stick to, and a small fleet of A-Stars lifts four skiers at a time onto ridgelines above Glacier Bay. This is the expert end of the sport, and the honest brief matters: you need genuine steep-skiing ability, avalanche training and the patience of a saint. Heli operations here lose 30–50% of days to weather; good operators sell packages by heli-hours with refunds or credits for what you do not fly, so read the terms before you pay. Down days mean sea-level touring, eagle-watching on the Chilkat River and the Fogcutter bar. Getting in: fly to Juneau, then take the fast ferry or a bush flight up the Lynn Canal fjord — an arrival to remember. February to April, with March the sweet spot. Budget around £7,500 for a seven-day package with guiding and full board, excluding flights to Alaska.
