South Tyrol and Veneto, Italy · Italy
The Alta Via 2 traverses the central Dolomites from Bressanone to Feltre in 9-10 days through the Puez-Geisler, Sella, and Pale di San Martino groups — more remote and demanding than the AV1, with several via ferrata sections and a more challenging rifugio booking situation. The Sella massif — a flat-topped plateau at 2,500 m surrounded by vertical rock — is one of the most remarkable geological formations in Europe. The traverse crosses terrain associated with the World War One front; Austrian-Italian trenches survive on several summits.
