Ski tour the remote Westfjords — Iceland's least-visited region, a peninsula of dramatic fjords and 900 m peaks that receives some of the heaviest snowfall in the country — on untracked terrain with minimal infrastructure. Most routes are self-guided; a few local guides operate from the small town of Isafjordur. The combination of sea-level fjords and alpine ridges visible in every direction creates extraordinary ski touring scenery. Aurora borealis is visible on clear nights from January to March. Avalanche skills are essential; the steep fjord headwalls provide serious terrain.
