Wake in the dark at a lodge on the Tambopata River and motor upstream to the Colpa Colorado — a clay cliff where, as the sun rises, hundreds of macaws, parrots and parakeets descend in shrieking waves to eat the mineral-rich clay. It is one of South America's great wildlife spectacles, and the reserve's oxbow lakes back it up: a giant otter family hunting in formation on Tres Chimbadas, black caimans picked out by torchlight, and canopy towers that put you at eye level with mixed flocks at dawn. Tambopata is the accessible Amazon — a 55-minute flight from Cusco (or about 1h40 from Lima) to Puerto Maldonado, then two to four hours by motorised canoe — so it suits first-time jungle travellers who want serious wildlife without expedition logistics. The variable that catches people out is the surazo: cold fronts from the south, mostly June to August, that can drop nights to 10°C and empty the clay lick for a day or two, so pack a warm layer even for the tropics. Around £1,100 buys six days full board at a mid-range lodge; the April-October dry season is best for trail access and clay-lick activity.
