Overview

You climb the 50-metre steel tower in the dark, and as the forest exhales its first mist the canopy spreads at your feet: macaws crossing in pairs, a channel-billed toucan yelping from an emergent kapok, and — if the guides' radio crackle is right — a harpy eagle hunched on a distant snag. Cristalino is the southern Amazon at its richest, a private reserve beside a state park on a blackwater river so clear it looks like poured glass. Days alternate boat drifts for giant otters and tapir with slow trail walks for white-whiskered spider monkeys, curl-crested aracaris and poison-dart frogs. The catch is expectation: this is dense rainforest, not the Serengeti, and wildlife is earned in fragments — a good guide and quiet feet matter more than luck. Fly Cuiabá to Alta Floresta, then a short drive and boat transfer upriver. The lodge is comfortable but remote; budget around £350–£400 a night full board with guiding, and come in the June–October dry season when trails are open and the clay licks are busy.
