Danakil Depression, Afar Region, Ethiopia · Ethiopia
Descend to the Danakil Depression — 116 metres below sea level, one of the hottest and lowest inhabited places on Earth — to see the active lava lake of Erta Ale volcano, the multicoloured sulphur springs of Dallol, and the Afar salt caravans that still cross this hellscape daily. Daytime temperatures reach 50 degrees Celsius; the tour operates overnight to the crater rim. Afar region requires armed guards for security. This is one of the most alien and extreme landscapes accessible to regular visitors anywhere on the planet.
