The Masoala Peninsula in northeast Madagascar is the largest primary rainforest reserve in Madagascar and the richest biodiversity hotspot in the Indian Ocean — home to 11 lemur species, the helmet vanga, red ruffed lemurs, and the iridescent comet moth. Getting there involves a boat from Maroantsetra; moving through the park involves local guides and basic forest camps. The peninsula's bay-side beaches are among the most isolated in the Indian Ocean.
