Overview
The Ahaggar Mountains in southern Algeria rise from the Sahara desert in extraordinary volcanic plugs and serrated basalt ridges, reaching 2,918 m at Mount Tahat — the highest point in Algeria. This is the traditional homeland of the Tuareg, and trekking the plateaus and canyons of the Parc National de l'Ahaggar requires a Tuareg guide from Tamanrasset. The rock art at Tassili n'Ajjer depicts animals extinct in the Sahara for 5,000 years. This is the Sahara at its most profound.
