Overview

Explore Iceland's colourful Fjallabak Nature Reserve — a highland interior of rhyolite mountains in reds, yellows, and purples, obsidian lava fields, steaming hot spring rivers, and geothermal hot pots you can bathe in. The reserve holds Landmannalaugar and the northern half of the Laugavegur trail, but also vast unmarked terrain beyond the main route. The F208 highland road is one of Iceland's most dramatic drives if not trekking, and the highland fords on it require a high-clearance 4WD. Highland conditions can change within hours year-round.
