Overview

Finse, at 1,222 m on the Oslo-Bergen railway, has no road access at all: you step off the train into a white world where Amundsen and Shackleton trained for the poles and the Hoth scenes of The Empire Strikes Back were filmed. North rises the ice dome of the Hardangerjøkulen glacier; south, the Hardangervidda plateau runs unbroken to the horizon. Multi-day Nordic tours link the DNT hut network — Finse towards Krækkja and Sandhaug — carrying light packs between staffed huts with waffles and proper dinners waiting, or you can day-tour to the glacier rim and back. Late winter is the season: March to early May brings long daylight, a settled snowpack and the annual Skarverennet, when more than 10,000 skiers race the 38 km from Finse towards Ustaoset in an atmosphere between a marathon and a festival. The plateau's hazard is white-out — featureless terrain plus wind demands real navigation skills or a guide, and storms can pin even strong parties in huts.
