Overview

Gwaii Haanas protects the southern third of Haida Gwaii, and there are no roads and no trails — you travel as the Haida always have, by water. Kayak parties and guided mothership trips thread the east-coast channels; floatplanes from Sandspit collect the time-poor. The great sites are minded by Haida Watchmen, who welcome you ashore with the histories: the hot pools of Gandll K'in Gwaay.yaay (Hotspring Island), the longhouse depressions at T'anuu, and at the far southern tip SGang Gwaay (Ninstints), a UNESCO site where the last standing mortuary poles lean gently back into the rainforest that is reclaiming them. Wildlife is constant — Steller sea lions, humpbacks, and Haida Gwaii's outsized black bears working the tide line; there are no grizzlies on the islands. Weather is the boss: Hecate Strait manufactures wind, so schedules bend and buffer days are mandatory. May to August.
