Fourteen days, 226 miles, and a vertical mile of rock between you and the rim: a full-length oar-raft expedition through the Grand Canyon is the benchmark against which river trips are measured. From the glassy put-in at Lees Ferry the Colorado drops through more than eighty rapids, the geology rewinding two billion years until you camp beneath black Vishnu schist older than complex life. The rapids arrive as rites of passage — Hance, Crystal, then Lava Falls, the most famous whitewater in North America, scouted with your stomach somewhere around your knees. Between them come the canyon's soft miracles: the vaulted amphitheatre of Redwall Cavern, the impossible blue of Havasu Creek, waterfalls at Deer Creek and Elves Chasm, mule deer in camp at dusk. Book absurdly early: commercial seats with licensed outfitters (about £4,900 for a full canyon, meals and guides included) sell out more than a year out, and private permits go by weighted lottery with years-long odds. Trips launch April to October; spring and autumn dodge the worst heat. The variable nobody expects is the water — released from Glen Canyon Dam at 8C, it makes every splash a gasp in desert air that can hit 45C.
