Overview

You hear Náįlįcho — Virginia Falls — an hour before you see it: 96 metres of the South Nahanni folding over a sandstone lip around a central spire, nearly twice the height of Niagara, with no road within a hundred kilometres. Most expeditions begin here, floatplane from Fort Simpson, portaging the falls, then a week of big, readable whitewater through four canyons cut a kilometre deep into the Mackenzie Mountains. The days build a rhythm: Class II-III wave trains, an eddy-out to soak at Kraus Hotsprings, camps on gravel bars in Deadmen Valley beneath 1,200-metre limestone. At The Gate the river hairpins under Pulpit Rock and the walls close to a corridor that silences every boat. This was among the first World Heritage sites ever inscribed, and it still feels like nobody has told anyone. Tandem whitewater canoe experience (or hard training on day one) is expected; spraydecked canoes handle the rest. Outfitters run 10-14 day guided descents from about £6,200 including the floatplane; self-guided parties need park registration and a shuttle plan out of Nahanni Butte. The variable is water level — a rainy week upstream turns III into a pushy IV, and guides re-rig accordingly.
