Sälen to Mora, Dalarna · Sweden
The Vasaloppet is the world's oldest and longest cross-country ski race — 90km through the Dalarna forest from Sälen to Mora, run every first Sunday of March since 1922. Up to 15,800 competitors start in waves, following the track Gustav Vasa used to flee into exile in 1520, only to be persuaded to return and lead the Swedish revolt. The race now attracts elite professionals, world-class amateurs, and weekend warriors from 80 countries. Training for the Vasaloppet is a year-round commitment if you want to finish respectably — the classic technique (diagonal striding and double-poling) requires specific muscle conditioning that running or cycling does not fully replicate. Skate skiing fitness transfers better. First-timers typically aim for the 6-hour mark; elites finish in under 3:40. The course climbs and descends through snow-laden pine forest on a groomed single track that widens to 8-12 lanes at key sections. Blueberry soup and energy drinks are distributed at checkpoints — the soup is tradition. The final kilometre through Mora with 50,000 spectators lining the street is one of sport's great finishers. Lottery entry opens in June each year; demand far exceeds supply. Stay in Mora, Borlänge, or at race-package hotels in Sälen. March in Dalarna averages -5°C but can reach -20°C — dress for the low end.
