Bulgaria E4 Rila-Pirin Traverse

Overview

Bulgaria's leg of the E4 is the Balkans' best-kept alpine secret: from Vitosha's stone-run plateau above Sofia the route runs south through Rila and Pirin — the ranges that hold every summit over 2,900 m between the Alps and the Caucasus — towards the Greek border. Climb Musala (2,925 m), the peninsula's highest point, traverse the glacial staircase of the Rila Seven Lakes cirque, then cross into Pirin's marble country for Vihren (2,914 m) and the Koncheto ridge, a knife-edge with a steel cable where the drop goes both ways. The hut (hizha) network is cheap, characterful and gloriously unreformed — dormitories, bean soup, no Alpine booking apps; arrive by mid-afternoon and carry lev in cash. Afternoon thunderstorms are the summer metronome: summit early, be off the ridges by two. June to September; the Seven Lakes draw weekend crowds, the rest stays quiet. Around £500 for a week of huts and mountain dinners. Detour to the UNESCO-listed Rila Monastery on the way out — its frescoes are the cultural summit of the walk.
