Nothing in Britain feels more Arctic than the Cairngorm plateau in February: a granite tableland above 1,100 m where storms arrive at 100 mph and a good winter looks like Svalbard. Based out of Aviemore, mix days on the Cairngorm Mountain lifts with the real prize — ski-touring across the plateau to Ben Macdui (1,309 m), backcountry turns off the Fiacaill ridges and Coire an t-Sneachda, and, in a strong snow year, the classic Nordic through-route of the Lairig Ghru. Be under no illusion about the skills bill. Whiteout navigation by compass bearing and pacing is the core competence, avalanche awareness is non-negotiable — read the SAIS Cairngorms forecast every morning — and ice axe and crampons live on your pack. The snow itself is the gamble: some winters deliver weeks of Alpine cover, others rain it away, so book flexibly and late. December to March.
