Overview

Besseggen is the ridge Ibsen sent Peer Gynt across, and it earns the drama: on one side Lake Gjende glows glacial green 400 m below, on the other the deep-blue Bessvatnet lies almost level with the path, and for an hour you walk the narrowing rock between two colours. Do it the classic way — morning boat from Gjendesheim up the lake to Memurubu, then walk back east over the ridge; the scrambly step below Veslfjellet is far easier going up than down. Use the rest of the week for the Home of the Giants proper: Galdhøpiggen (2,469 m), Norway's highest, is a guided rope-team glacier walk from Juvasshytta or a longer glacier-free route from Spiterstulen, and the DNT hut network links high routes beneath Glittertind. Weather is the catch — Jotunheimen manufactures rain and summit cloud in any month, so build in slack days and book huts ahead for July and August. The season runs late June to September, once the Gjende boat starts. Around £900 covers a week of DNT huts with meals, the boat and bus transfers from Otta.
