Overview

The Soča is the river that makes you doubt your own eyes — a glacial emerald-turquoise, clear to the riverbed, running beneath the limestone walls of the Julian Alps. Walk the Soča Trail from the karst spring at its source in the Trenta valley down to Bovec, then continue on Alpe-Adria Trail stages through the gorges to Kobarid and the Tolmin Gorges, the lowest corner of Triglav National Park. The First World War is everywhere underfoot: this was the Isonzo Front, and the Kolovrat open-air trenches and the Kobarid museum turn a valley walk into a history lesson. The swim is the moment you will remember — snowmelt holds the river at eight to ten degrees even in August, and the gasp is involuntary. If you extend to Triglav itself (2,864 m, Slovenia's highest), the summit ridge is a protected scramble and the Kredarica and Planika huts need booking weeks ahead in summer. June to September; Bovec makes the natural base, with rafting and canyoning for rest days. Around £700 covers five days of guesthouses, huts and enormous portions.
