The Massif des Ecrins is the highest Alpine massif entirely within France, centred on the Barre des Ecrins at 4102m, and its Tour des Ecrins is the region's classic circuit for mountaineers and strong hikers. The route takes 10 days through remote valleys and high glaciated passes, far fewer crowds than the Mont Blanc or Vanoise circuits.
