The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is New Zealand's most popular and finest day walk, crossing the volcanic plateau between Mount Ngauruhoe and Mount Tongariro through a landscape of sulphur fields, crater lakes, and lava flows. The 19.4-kilometre crossing gains 765m through active volcanic terrain that served as Mordor in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films. The Emerald Lakes glow in impossible shades of green and blue above the Red Crater volcanic cone.
