Sweden Kungsleden Summer Hike

Overview

The Kungsleden runs 440 kilometres through Swedish Lapland, but the northern week from Abisko to Nikkaluokta is the distilled version: above the birch line almost throughout, over the Tjaktja pass at 1,150m, and down the great glacial trench of the Tjaktjavagge with mountains stacked grey and green to the horizon. STF huts every 10-20 kilometres set the rhythm - wood-fired saunas, lake swims, hut wardens selling chocolate in the middle of genuine wilderness - and in July the midnight sun means you walk whenever you like. The classic detour climbs Kebnekaise, Sweden's highest peak, whose melting summit glacier has now dropped it just below the 2,100-metre mark. Sami reindeer herding is the living culture of the whole route - respect closures during calving and marking. The bogs and river braids are bridged and plank-walked, but mosquitoes rule July: a head net weighs nothing and preserves sanity. Sarek National Park, visible to the south, is the pathless graduate option; the Kungsleden itself needs no navigation beyond attention. Huts take no advance bookings for beds but rarely turn walkers away; STF membership pays for itself in three nights. Around £1,200 covers the week with huts, hut meals and the mountain station splurge at Kebnekaise.
