Finnish Lapland skis differently: no lifts, no drama, just rolling treeless fells, frozen mires and pine forest silvered with rime, crossed on light Nordic touring skis at a pace that lets the silence in. Urho Kekkonen National Park's 2,550 square kilometres hold a network of open wilderness huts — free, stove-warmed, first-come — and marked winter routes from Saariselkä and Kiilopää, so you can plan days hut-to-hut past reindeer herds with the aurora as evening entertainment. The cold is dry, beautiful and serious: minus 20 is routine in February and minus 30 possible, so this is a trip about systems — layered wool, spare mitts, a stove you can light with numb fingers — rather than technical skill, which makes it a perfect first polar journey for competent cross-country skiers. Sámi reindeer-herding culture is present and living here; visit it on its own terms. February to April balances light and snowpack, with aurora odds best away from the full moon. A week mixing sauna-equipped base nights and hut tours runs about £1,800 including Ivalo flights from Helsinki.
