Overview

Paddling Disko Bay is kayaking inside a cathedral. The Sermeq Kujalleq glacier — the most productive in the northern hemisphere, source of roughly a tenth of Greenland's icebergs — fills the Ilulissat Icefjord with white towers that drift past your bow, creaking and splitting in the midnight sun, while humpbacks surface close enough to hear their breath. This is also the homeland of the kayak itself: qajaq technique was perfected here over centuries. Respect the distances your guides insist on. Bergs roll without warning and calving waves travel far — you admire the icefjord mouth from a wide berth, never inside it — and water at 2-4°C makes drysuits and rescue drills the foundation of the trip. June to August brings open water, 24-hour light and the whales; tundra-shore camps mean carrying everything, polar-bear awareness included. Guided weeks out of Ilulissat run about £3,500 before flights via Copenhagen or Reykjavík, which are the other big line on the budget. Cold-water paddling experience is expected, not optional.
