Overview
Chukotka in the Russian Far East is one of the most remote inhabited regions on Earth, home to the Chukchi people whose nomadic reindeer herding culture survived Soviet collectivisation through sheer geographic isolation. The spring migration of reindeer herds numbering thousands across the tundra to summer coastal pastures follows routes unchanged for thousands of years. Walrus haul-outs of 10,000 animals on Pacific beaches and whale watching add to the extraordinary wildlife density.
