The Gunung Leuser National Park in northern Sumatra is one of two remaining wild orangutan habitats, with the Bukit Lawang rehabilitation centre offering multi-day jungle treks to encounter wild orangutans in the canopy above. The trek through lowland dipterocarp rainforest also passes Thomas leaf monkeys, Sumatran gibbons, and the world's largest flower, the Rafflesia arnoldii which blooms briefly and reeks of rotting flesh. The critically endangered Sumatran tiger and rhino inhabit the deeper forest.
