Overview

The jeep rounds a rock outcrop near Patanangala and your tracker taps the roof twice: a leopard is draped along a granite shelf, tail hanging, utterly indifferent to the diesel idle below. Yala's Block 1 holds one of the highest leopard densities on earth, and because these cats grew up as top predator — no lions, no hyenas — they walk the tracks in daylight like they own them. Between cat sightings the park delivers constantly: elephants at the waterholes, painted storks and crocodiles in the lagoons, sloth bears snuffling palu fruit in June, and peacocks displaying on every second termite mound. The honest downside is company — a good sighting can draw a scrum of jeeps. Go at first light, ask your driver to work the quieter blocks, or add a day in adjacent Kumana. Base yourself in Tissamaharama, 30 minutes from the Palatupana gate; safaris run roughly 5.30am and 2.30pm. The park usually closes for several weeks around September–October drought. Four days with a private jeep, tracker and guesthouse comes to around £600–£700.
