Overview
The Azores archipelago in the mid-Atlantic Ocean sit directly on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates pull apart, creating nine volcanic islands with hydrothermal hot springs, calderas filled with turquoise crater lakes, and the chance to observe sperm whales from shore. The summit of Pico volcano at 2,351 metres is the highest point in Portugal and the second most prominent island summit in the Atlantic. Multi-day island-hopping by ferry and cycling adds scale.
