Kissamos · Greece
The E4 European Long Distance Path crosses the entire island of Crete from Kissamos in the west to Zakros in the east over 320 kilometres, passing through the White Mountains and Samaria Gorge, the longest gorge in Europe at 18 kilometres. The route traverses wild plateaus covered in Cretan herbs including oregano, thyme, and dittany, and passes through remote mountain villages where the endemic Cretan wild goat, the kri-kri, can be spotted on cliffsides. The Gorge of Samaria descends 1,200 metres in 18 kilometres.
