Crete E4 European Path Trek

Overview

The E4 across Crete is the Mediterranean's toughest island traverse: 320 kilometres from Kissamos in the west to Kato Zakros in the east, over the bald 2,400-metre summits of the White Mountains, down the 16-kilometre Samaria Gorge -- 1,200 metres deep, with kri-kri ibex watching from the cliffs -- and along a south coast where villages like Loutro are reachable only on foot or by ferry. The scent is what you remember: wild thyme, sage and dittany crushed underfoot on every high plateau, with sheep bells the only sound for hours. Spring (April-May) buries the route in wildflowers; September-October trades them for warm seas at the end of each day. High summer is dangerous heat on the exposed sections -- carry three litres minimum and refill at every village and chapel cistern. Waymarking ranges from good to imaginary, so keep offline maps to hand. Tavernas and simple rooms let you walk hut-free for around 800 pounds over three weeks; Samaria itself is a controlled national park with an entry fee and no camping.
