Overview

The Bernese Oberland holds the biggest glacier terrain in the Alps, and the Jungfraujoch railway -- tunnelled through the Eiger itself -- delivers you to 3,454 metres with skis on your pack. From there the classic tours unfold across the Aletsch basin: sweeping descents to Konkordiaplatz, where three ice streams collide into the longest glacier in the Alps, nights at the Monchsjochhutte or the eyrie-perched Konkordiahutte (its long metal ladder-stair a rite of passage), and summit days on the Monch or the Abeni Flue before the glide out toward the Lotschental. This is serious glacier travel: crevasse-rescue skills, harness and rope matter as much as skins, and most parties hire a UIAGM guide (around 400 pounds a day, shared). March and April give the best mix of settled snowpack and long days; huts must be booked ahead and whiteouts can pin you down, so build in a spare day. Hut half-boards, a guide share and the Jungfraujoch fare put a six-day tour around 2,500-3,000 pounds from Grindelwald -- the Eiger north face stares at you the whole ride up.
