Overview
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is New Zealand's most popular day walk and one of the world's finest volcano treks, crossing between the active cones of Mount Ngauruhoe and Tongariro through a landscape of emerald crater lakes, steam vents, and red lava scree. The 19.4-kilometre route gains 800 metres to the Red Crater at 1,886 metres before descending past the Emerald Lakes to the Ketetahi hot springs. The mountains are sacred to Maori and form the backdrop for Lord of the Rings.
