Overview

The Fagaras ridge is the roof of Romania: a 70-kilometre crystalline crest that rarely drops below 2,000 metres, crossing Moldoveanu at 2,544 metres -- the country's highest point -- and a chain of glacial cirques cradling lakes like Balea and Capra. You walk for days with the Transylvanian plain far below on one side and the Southern Carpathians rolling away on the other, sharing the range with Europe's largest brown bear population outside Russia, plus chamois on the crags and the occasional lynx track in late snow. The catch is the weather: afternoon thunderstorms build fast in July and August and the ridge offers few escape routes between passes, so start each stage at dawn. Shelter is a mix of basic refuges and wild camping -- carry a tent and treat old map markings with suspicion. Access is easy by Romanian standards: bus from Sibiu, or the spectacular Transfagarasan road to Balea Lake. Around 500 pounds covers the week including transfers and huts; finish with the Brukenthal museum in Sibiu.
