Overview

Komodo Island in the Indonesian archipelago is home to the world's largest lizard, the Komodo dragon, which reaches 3 metres in length and brings down deer, wild pigs and water buffalo with serrated teeth and venom glands that stop a wound clotting. Trekking the island's three ranger-led routes - short, medium and long - allows close encounters with these prehistoric predators in their natural habitat; attacks on people are rare, but the rangers carry a forked stick for good reason. The surrounding Komodo National Park waters contain some of the most biodiverse coral reefs in the world, with manta ray cleaning stations at Manta Point.
