Port Moresby · Papua New Guinea
The Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea follows the World War II trail across the Owen Stanley Range through which Australian and Papuan forces repulsed the Japanese advance on Port Moresby in 1942. The 96-kilometre route crosses seven major mountain ranges at over 2,000 metres through dense jungle in some of the most difficult terrain on Earth. Carrying a heavy pack over the same ground in honour of the soldiers who fought there is an intensely moving pilgrimage.
