Bettles · United States
Gates of the Arctic National Park sits entirely above the Arctic Circle in Alaska and contains no roads, no maintained trails, and no facilities whatsoever. The classic traverse follows the North Fork of the Koyukuk River through the Brooks Range passes that Robert Marshall first explored and named in the 1930s. Caribou migrations of tens of thousands of animals can be witnessed during the September traverse.
