Overview

Auyuittuq — the land that never melts — is where the planet keeps its most extreme rock walls: Thor's 1,250 m overhanging west face, the biggest purely vertical drop on earth, and Asgard's twin flat-topped towers. The Akshayuk Pass traverse runs about 97 km from Overlord, a boat ride up the fjord from the Inuit hamlet of Pangnirtung, through the glaciated heart of Baffin Island to Qikiqtarjuaq — a week and more of moraine, emergency shelters and 24-hour July daylight under granite that makes Yosemite look domestic. The river crossings are the crux: glacial melt pulses through the afternoon, so big fords happen early in the morning, linked and deliberate. This is polar bear country at both coasts — firearms are not permitted in the national park, so carry deterrents and follow the protocol from the mandatory Parks Canada orientation, and register every camp. July and August only. Charter logistics — flights to Pangnirtung via Iqaluit, boat drops both ends — dominate the roughly £5,000 budget for eight days. Cold, committing, and the emptiest great landscape most walkers will ever cross.
