Overview

Disko Island sits across the bay from Ilulissat, and the ferry to Qeqertarsuaq is an event in itself — the Diskoline boat threads an armada of icebergs calved from Sermeq Kujalleq, the most productive glacier in the northern hemisphere. From the brightly painted town you walk out to Kuannit, where columnar basalt cliffs drop to a shore of arctic angelica, and up the Blæsedalen valley between flat-topped volcanic fells. Above town, sled dogs are staked across the slopes: Qeqertarsuaq keeps a living dog-sledding culture that long predates European contact, and summer sled trips have traditionally run up on the Lyngmark Glacier — check locally what is operating. Midnight sun lasts from late May to late July and turns the bergs gold at two in the morning; humpbacks feed offshore all summer. The ferry is the variable — weather-dependent and not daily — so build a buffer day each way or risk missing every onward connection. June to August. Around £2,500 for five days including ferries, a Qeqertarsuaq guesthouse and a glacier dog-sled trip. Greenland is never cheap, but this is its most affordable slice of the high Arctic.
